Traffic violations threaten the livelihood of CDL holders

Mar 31, 2021 | traffic violations for commercial driver's license holders

Certain types of commercial drivers are required to have a special license in order to operate larger vehicles designed for the transportation of goods. A commercial driver’s license is crucial to the career of many Ohio drivers, and losing this license could mean losing one’s livelihood. Traffic violations of various kinds could result in a suspension or revocation of this license, but there are ways to fight back and protect a CDL

CDL restrictions

The restrictions for a CDL are much stricter than those for a regular driver’s license. For examples, .08% is the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) threshold for most drivers, but it is lower for CDL holders. Registering under a .08% BAC could result in the suspension of a CDL for a commercial driver. Other restrictions include:

  • Moving violations, which include driving 15mph or higher over the speed limit, can result in a CDL suspension.
  • Causing a serious motor vehicle collision can result in the suspension of a CDL license.
  • An accumulation of points on a CDL can result in a suspension or revocation, as well as complications when seeking employment in the future.

CDL drivers are held to a higher standard, which means the consequences are more serious and the stakes are higher when facing driving violations.

A strong defense

A CDL driver has the right to fight for his or her future interests when dealing with traffic violations. This is more than just the right to drive; it is a driver’s entire livelihood on the line. It may be helpful to seek the guidance of an experienced Ohio traffic attorney to learn how to present a strong defense.
